Therefore a new classification\u00a0approach aiming to\u00a0provide the reader with a systematic and easy-to-read overview of a complicated issue was devised.<\/p>\n<p>To find out how values were expressed in actual <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips18' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>arguments<\/span>, we conducted a review covering \u2018gray\u2019 sources like press releases\/statements, web texts, policy documents, reports as well as peer reviewed literature. This\u00a0resulted in an initial listing of 31 typical \u201cpremise statements\u201d representing the <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong>spectrum of arguments for biodiversity<\/strong><\/span> as expressed by authors.<\/p>\n<p>Following the observation that these arguments were in some cases vague and incomplete, we revised them into a framework aimed to clarify the distinction between core components. In particular, 17 separate <span style=\"color: #286239;\"> <strong><span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips23' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>benefits<\/span> of biodiversity<\/strong><\/span> were identified, covering the full range of intrinsic, moral, <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips21' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>ecosystem<\/span> service and other \u2018values\u2019 identified with conservation.<\/p>\n<p>This classification system was used for the identification of biodiversity units, benefits and <span class='tooltipsall classtoolTips22' style='border-bottom:2px dotted #888;'>beneficiaries<\/span> in our case studies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> toolTips('.classtoolTips27','The variety of living organisms and the ecological complexes of which they are part.
